The Hollywood Reporter has announced that Gary Whitta has been hired to pen Mark Millar's Starlight feature film. Whitta is currently hard at work on a untitled Star Wars spin-off film but will jump onto Starlight which follows a space hero named Duke McQueen.

Duke McQueen, who saved the universe four decades ago but came back to Earth, where no one believed his fantastic stories. But years later, after he's settled down and grown up, he's recruited for one last adventure.

 In other news Godzilla 2 which will be directed by Gareth Edwards once again has found it's own writer (via Deadline). According to the report Max Borenstein will indeed return to the King of Beasts sequel slated for June 8th, 2018. 

As previously reported Godzilla will now fightRodan, Ghidora and Mothra in the sequel.  

This past San Diego Comic-Con director Gareth Edwards revealed that he would be returning to the already confirmed Godzilla sequel. He also revealed a small teaser that revealed the villains of the film which ended up being longtime Godzilla foes Rodan, Mothra and Ghidorah. Well, today the release date for the film will be slated for June 8th, 2018. The reason being because Edwards is currently hard at work at the still untitled Star Wars spin-off slated for 2016. But don't fret Legendary is rebooting the King Kong franchise with a prequel titled Skull Island which will also hit in 2016 to fill your monster mash fix.

Today, Legendary reveal at their San Diego Comic-Con panel that director Gareth Edwards would indeed return for the sequel Godzilla II! This comes after he was announced as director of the first Star Wars spin-off flicks slated in 2016. He gave the viewers an intro video talking about the cleaning up the city of San Fransisco after Godzilla destroyed it....the  revealed the monster villains that would appear in the sequel in a teaser trailer (via EW)

Theres decades-old footage of monsters in the South Pacific, waging war against battleships and nuclear explosions. Ominous audio of President John F. Kennedy talking about global threats plays over the scenes.

We see the shadow of a multi-headed dragon, a close-up of giant moth eyes, and mutant pteranodon. “There is still one secret that remains hidden: There … Are … Others.”

Today it was announced through the trades then officially by StarWars.com that Gareth Edwards the director of the smash hit Godzilla is set to helm the first Star Wars Spin-Off movie in 2016. Disney must be really getting Star Wars bake to it's routes given Gareth Edwards filmed most of Godzilla with practical effects instead of heavy CGI. Here is the press release:

In addition to the episodes of a new Star Wars trilogy, Lucasfilm and Disney have begun development on multiple stand-alone movies that will offer new stories beyond the core Saga. Gareth Edwards will direct the first stand-alone film, with a screenplay by Gary Whitta. The film is due out December 16, 2016.

Gareth Edwards blazed into the filmmaking forefront with his acclaimed work on Monsters, a film he wrote, directed and served on as cinematographer and visual effects artist. The skill and vision readily apparent in Monsters earned him the high-profile spot directing this year's smash hit Godzilla.

"Ever since I saw Star Wars I knew exactly what I wanted to do for the rest of my life - join the Rebel Alliance! I could not be more excited & honored to go on this mission with Lucasfilm, said Edwards.

Gary Whittas screenwriting credits include 2010s The Book of Eli starring Denzel Washington. He is also well known as a journalist and editor in the video game industry, as well as part of the BAFTA award-winning team on Telltale Games adaptation of The Walking Dead.

Whitta states, "From the moment I first saw the original movie as a wide-eyed kid, Star Wars has been the single most profound inspiration to my imagination and to my career as a writer. It is deeply special to me,so to be given the opportunity to contribute to its ongoing legacy, especially in collaboration with a film-maker as talented as Gareth,is literally a dream come true. I'm still pinching myself."

 The question is which character will he tackle? The mercenary for hire movie like Boba Fett? or a buddy-cop duo movie with Han and Chewie? That is still to be determined....

Lastly, what does this mean for the Godzilla sequel that was announced over the weekend?

After grossing over $100 Million internationally the King of Beasts is expected to make another appearance! Today, both Warner Bros and Legendary have announced that plans will move forward with a Godzilla sequel (via Deadline). This is very interesting given Warner Bros and Legendary split last year and then partnered up with Universal Studios. This basically foils any ideas of a King Kong vs Godzilla film in the future since Warner Bros still has a stake in the franchise. Directer Gareth Edwards is expected to return as well.

Today, Legendary with their new partners Universal (via Deadline) announced a top secret movie coming out November 4th, 2016. Story details are being kept very quiet on the movie but it's being called an "event project". What could it be?!

After the success of the massive crossover known as The Avengers it seems every single studio want's to get some type of crossover movie going. "The Avengers Sickness" is effecting all studios with Warner Bros moving forward with Justice League, Sony and FOX with their Spider-Man and X-Men cinematic universes respectively taking off. But what about Legendary and Universal? What can they do?


Last year after Legendary split their partnership with Warner Bros and teamed up with Universal they gained a slew of characters from their "Universal Monsters" collection. Mixing Legendary Studios monsters of Pacific Rim and the upcoming Godzilla film with Universal could make a great crossover film. One monster in particular has been at Universal and has met Godzilla once before on the big screen........his name is King Kong!



Now well this is pure speculation and hopeful thinking theoretically Legendary and Universal big "Event" film could indeed be a monster mash up film between Godzilla and King Kong if not other monsters that are owned by Universal Pictures.


Yesterday Collider spoke with Legendary CEO Thomas Tull about their upcoming Godzilla movie. They asked him point blank if a Pacific Rim/Godzilla movie could ever exist which he replys

COLLIDER: So I have to ask you as a fan of another universe that you helped create and a fan of this universe that you’re hoping to reboot, if you will, is it possible that the world of Pacific Rim and Godzilla are the same world or are they completely different?

TULL: They’re completely different worlds.

COLLIDER: Am I the only one to ask or are other people asking?

TULL: You know, you’re the only one that has asked it in that way.  It was very specific versus saying, “Is there any way Godzilla would ever fight-?”  or something like that.

COLLIDER: I asked Guillermo point blank when Pacific Rim was coming out and Godzilla was being put together I’m like, “This could be a fun crossover.”

TULL: [Laughs]

So unfortunately you won't be seeing Gypsy Danger battling Godzilla but when Collider mentioned the Universal Monsters Legendary had just acquired the CEO mentions:

COLLIDER: Universal has Universal Monsters, I don’t know how you feel about Universal Monsters.

TULL: I’m a huge fan and I think that’s a rich tapestry, of course.

Of course remember this is all pure speculation on a monster crossover. For now it is still simply an Untitled Legendary/Universal film slated for 2016

A giant radioactive monster called Godzilla appears to wreak destruction on mankind.

For a while I've know that that a draft for the upcoming Godzilla movie was indeed online somewhere. What I could deduce from forums is that its a 2012 draft. So these suppose plot points could most certainly have changed since then. According to an Anonymous user on the Foolz.us Forum here is some massive spoilers to the upcoming Godzilla remake

:: POTENTIAL SPOILERS AHEAD ::

The film opens in 1954. A nuke is being prepared. The missile is loaded up, the count down begins... And GODZILLA rises from beneath an island unexpectedly. The bomb comes down and hits him head on in a massive nuclear explosion. 

So there it is: Godzilla has existed since the 1950's. However, as we learn later in the script... His famous rampage NEVER happened. We learn verbally that he basically appeared and started nosing around sometime after the bombing of Nagasaki- and that it is believed the "radiation changed him somehow". Russia and the United States jointly dropped a nuke on him after he apparently took out a few ships in their nuclear fleet. After that he was never heard from again aside from the odd "bloop". 

Years later, the corpse of another Godzilla is discovered frozen in the Antarctic ice. The fossil is locked in battle with two creatures, dubbed mutos. From this, it is deduced that the mutos and this giant creature, dubbed "Jira" after Japanese for whale due to it's immense size, are natural enemies and that a loose Muto (like the one that escapes from a lab in the film) would surely seek out one of these "Jira" creatures. There's actually a legit sounding reason for this, but I'm not sure how it makes sense given than the radiation from Nagasaki "changed" Godzilla--- but we're getting to that.

Also about the name, an ignorant US military type bungles it. It is mentioned that the corpse in the ice is referred to as "Jira" after Japanese for whale. Someone else makes the observation that a similar creature appeared in the fifties shortly after Nagasaki--- and that islanders mistook it for their God, "Gojira".

There are two Mutos. One male, one female. They're supposed to hunt as a pair: and their prey is Godzilla's species.
The Mutos need to lay eggs inside Godzilla's body so that they can gestate, because their eggs need to feed off of a nuclear power source. They call to Godzilla, and intentionally lure him so that they can tag team him and stick him with a Chrysalis.

The male is the first one he encounters at the airport- he absolutely thrashes the poor thing but doesn't actually manage to take it out. The female is a far more intimidating opponent

He uses his atomic breath, but only about three times. All I know is it's blue fire that is described as being like napalm. No flashing spines mentioned

There isn't an army of little crabs or anything- it's not like Legion (who would probably "OH GODZILLA! WHAT TERRIBLE LANGUAGE!" these things up). Descriptively, they bring about mental images of bio luminescent assassin bugs. Long spindley legs, and two bigger arms that sort of recall the aggregate Destroyah that Junior fights in the '95 film. There are two creatures mentioned, and I know that there is something of an evolutionary process as well- that's all I'll say on that topic. One of them is described as being substantially larger than the other and seems to battle Godzilla pretty well; the script makes it clear that the battle is somewhat one sided in Godzilla's favor until the tables turn later in the fight. Functionally, they remind me a LOT of Megaguirus. There's even a specific moment lifted from that movie that should be pretty neat to see.    

Godzilla has an EPIC battle with the military in which he emerges smoking and riddled with surface damage, but totally unharmed in the general sense. They can't hope to stop him. There's a very deep feeling of dread knowing how unstoppable he is.

Godzilla is described as "thrashing" the muto in the airport scene. It seems very reminiscent of Gamera vs Gyaos in Shibuya from Gamera 3- but bigger, and more brutal. Another one on one battle taking place in the film reads a bit like Godzilla vs Angilas from the second toho film in that the smaller monster doesn't really measure up to Godzilla, but is certainly a vicious opponent. Yes, they're both bug monsters. I'm just using Angilas as a comparison. The fight itself contains elements straight from Godzilla X Megaguirus.

By the end of the fight Godzilla has taken a good beating and is even missing a couple spines.

Also, MUTO stands for Massive Unidentified Target Organism. Godzilla has three fights with them, the first is the one in the airport, and a finale fight that has two distinct chapters.

Godzilla kills the Mutos by brute strength. As written, this Godzilla is a brutal physical opponent who "thrashes", "slashes" and whips with his tail.

As far as the ending--- Godzilla has a rough time against the Mutos. Rough. In this draft, he survives in a way that is every fondly nostalgic for me as well as being somewhat ironic--- in a really good way. I really like Godzilla as this monster created from our meddling... Ultimately saving us from our meddling. He walks out a f*cking legend. It's cool.

Also, Bryan Cranston's character works at the nuclear facility in Hokkaido that melts down. The meltdown is blamed on a flaw from his design, and the disaster kills his wife (the scene everyone is talking about between the two of them is ABSENT from my draft, by the way) causing his stepkids (in this version, Ford and Elle are siblings) to resent him. The plot picks up when he re-emerges, convinced that "something else" was the cause of the disaster.

According to the poster this entire description came from another forum back in December called Scifi Japan which another user there posted several pages from the script to prove its authenticity. This user took it upon himself to type out the page description before it was taken down. Scifi Japan issued a statement on the pages:

Earlier today on another forum that shall not be mentioned, someone in the know had taken it upon themselves to start disseminating information from a leaked script for the new Godzilla film. The result was mass chaos, and a flurry of accusations that the OP was a troll and should be banned. He/she was ordered to provide proof, and incredibly, he/she complied and started posted images from the actual script, which appeared to be the Max Borenstein revision from June 2012.

A separate poster validated that this was the same leaked copy they possessed, and that what the OP was saying was true. After this, the OP was suddenly banned, all material removed, and a notice was posted that sharing leaked scripts is illegal and will not be tolerated on that forum.

Again this seems to be a draft that was possibly before the final draft of the script. It also seems its a semi-sequel to the 1954 Godzilla movie with a modern take. But again take with a grain of salt until further notice....

WB seems to be going around asking websites to take down these plot points under a Cease and Desist letter. So that practically means these are a legitimate threat to Warner Bros and Co. That means Max Borenstien revision of the script must have been minimal if they kept most of the previous draft still in the final draft.
