Finally, after many long years of trying to get this franchise on the right track director Gareth Edwards rights the ship and Godzilla is back and better than ever. This is the Godzilla movie, we have been waiting for. It is full of intense excitement, intrigue and actually has a wonderfully crafted story, that keeps you guessing at the turn of every corner in this flick.
The screenplay by Max Borenstein, written from a story by Dave Callaham, is seamlessly pulled together by masterful director Gareth Edwards “Godzilla” is an incredible movie filled with twists and turns throughout. Everyone who worked on this film from the top down put in every last effort that they could to make this wonderful film come to life. You can see all the blood, sweat and tears that each and every person put into this film with the final product that is up on the big screen.
“Godzilla” boasts a cast that includes Bryan Cranston, Ken Watanabe, Aaron Taylor Johnson and Elizabeth Olsen. Each actor really shines in this movie, none of their performances are ever over the top, and you get to see each actor's full ability play out in front of us. Each cast member has the ability to give so much, and Cranston is so wonderful in the few scenes that he is in, I wouldn't be surprised if he was nominated for a Best Supporting Actor Oscars at the next Academy Awards. He is simply that amazing and believable as a man who is driven to find out the answers about his wife that unfortunately passed away. The only real issue that “Godzilla” has going against itself, is that the film lacked a lot of Godzilla. For the first half of the movie you were given only a few teases of the giant monster, and you were always wanting to see just a bit more. This film felt like a cross between, “Jaws” and “Jurassic Park.” It still would have been amazing to see a few more scenes with that giant lizard fighting the crazy beasts and monsters that live deep inside the Earth. The pace of this film is fast and moves along quickly, and at no point will you be looking at the time wondering when the movie is over with.
Seeamus McGarvey deserves at the very least an Academy Award nomination for his work behind the camera as this movie's cinematographer. Not since “The Dark Knight” and “Inception” has the world seen such beautiful camera and lighting work. The scene where you see the military jumping out of the plane at night was one of the most awe-inspiring moments since the Balrog in “The Fellowship of the Ring” as that giant monster falls through the giant chasm in that movie. McGarvey is able to capture so many different elements and makes this film one of the most visually captivating flicks audiences have seen in a few years.
Other than not having Godzilla in this film enough, the film is quite incredible, and comes with a high recommendation to not just see this film in theaters, but to see this movie in IMAX.
