This XMen movie begins in the not so distant future where the world has been put under Sentinel and Government control. So Professor Xavier, with the help of Magneto send Wolverine back in time to stop the creation and the eventual threat of the Sentinels that have been created by Bolivar Trask. Trask, played wonderfully by Peter Dinklage is amazing in the role. However, the real gem in this picture is James McCavoy who again plays Professor Charles Xavier. Not only does he give the performance of his life, but he gives one of the best performances in not just a comic book movie, but one of the best performances in any movie. The journey that his Xavier goes on his heart-wrenching and powerful. McAvoy gives an Academy Award performance in “Days of Future Past” and hopefully the Academy will shine some goodwill toward him, he is that remarkable in his role of young Charles Xavier.
The hero of “XMen: Days of Future Past” is director Bryan Singer, he is able to take all the missteps the franchise has taken and completely erase them with logical story decisions that make much more sense and is far more satisfying. Not only did he have the ability to fix those problems, but he was able to get some amazing performances from Dinklage, McAavoy, Michael Fassbender and Hugh Jackman. The action sequences that happen throughout the movie, especially during that stadium sequence were shock and awe amazing, but were able to serve the story as well.
John Ottman does double duty on this film as Editor and Music Composer and is wonderful in both roles, there is never a dull moment in “XMen: Days of Future Past” the action pops and the story moves right along with great pace and speed. The musical composition that he created was incredible as well. f
The only issue that this movie has was Mystique’s motivation that played throughout the entirety of this flick just didn’t seem clear. There could have been a slight polish to the dialogue and the script to understand exactly she was doing, and why she was doing it. Other than that this movie is almost flawless, and sets up the next movie XMen: Age of Apocalypse perfectly. Let’s not forget about all the Quicksilver scenes, those were incredible and fans cannot wait to see more of that character in future movies
Let’s hope with the success of this movie, Fox continues to do business with director Bryan Singer, he has never made a bad XMen movie and I don’t think he has it in him to fail with this franchise.
