Directors Frank Miller(who wrote the original graphic novel) and Robert Rodriquez deliver a great sequel to one of the most visually appealing comic book movies ever that have ever graced the big screen. This time around they are back at it with “Sin City: A Dame to Kill For,” and with the help of many of the same actors and actresses that made the first film so wonderfully appealing you are left with a satisfying sequel that continues a great storyline and makes you want to come back for more.
Back again are the elaborate Las Vegas on steroids landscapes that Miller and Rodriquez have created and the achievement of the visuals is really something to marvel at. It is a visual pleasure that this is more than just style over substance. They were able to make Sin City even sleazier this time around and with the actors being saucier and more violent this time around you really get lost in the storytelling of the movie. Miller and Rodriquez actually make you apart of a great tale that has twists, turns and everything in between. Everyone involved with this project worked insanely hard to come up with a fantastically crafted movie that will have the hardcore Frank Miller fans satisfied. Nancy's storyline played by Jessica Alba called “Nancy’s Last Dance” is powerful, exciting, and thrilling. Without giving the major beats and the ending away everyone will surely be satisfied. So many things go on during the course of this film, but you are always looking at something that is so out of the box with it’s visual storytelling that you will be glued to your seat for the entire 102 minute run time for this film.
Director Rodriquez is really tuned in to almost every single facet of this movie. Not only was he heavily involved with the overall story and had his hand behind the camera directing and producing.Rodriquez was also able to find time to be the movies cinematographer, help the score the movie and was able to edit the entire thing by himself. Highly unusual for a big summer blockbuster in today’s movie world.
The film’s other director Frank Miller also has matured as a filmmaker as well, as he took what he learned from the flop that was “The Spirit” and was able to learn and grow as a filmmaker quite quickly. after and the final product that was “A Dame to Kill For” an interesting, and entertaining final summer blockbuster of 2014. The way that Miller was able to help compose the different shots, how he was able to get some really fascinating performances and the action set pieces were all top notch and all handled with the love and care that a seasoned director would be able to deliver.
“Sin City: A Dame to Kill For” has some really great performances from Mickey Rourke, Christopher Meloni and Joesph Gordon-Levitt. Unfortunately, for Lady Gaga her performance just is not on par with these other seasoned veterans. At times, she seems so out of place in the movie and it is almost as if she is acting in a completly different movie altogether. Gaga’s performance at times is simply so unbearable it takes you out of the movie completely. Hopefully if there is sequel to this movie, she will be left out of it completely.
If you are a fan of the original, you surely will leave hungry for more.
