Today, Variety announced that Oscar-Winning director Bill Condon (Twilight) has successfully pitched to Disney a live-action adaptation of the classic 1991 animated feature Beauty and the Beast. This comes after other fairy-tales have gotten the live action treatment such as Snow White and the Huntsman as well as the recently released Maleficent.
Hitfix also got some story details on the upcoming adaption. It seems this will be a direct remake and not an interpretation.
Sources tell HitFix that Condon won't only be drawing from the 1991 Disney film. In his pitch to the studio, the director said he would also include most, if not all, of the Menken/Rice songs from the Broadway musical that ran for 13 years from 1994 to 2007. It will be a "straight-forward, live action, large-budget movie musical,"Other live-action adaptions of classic fairy-tales and books include Cinderella, Into the Woods, Tarzan and two different Jungle Book adaptions. As well as a sequel to Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland and a sequel to Snow White & the Hunstman.
