While speaking with Badass Digest Marvel head Kevin Feige admits that if they were ever gonna do a female lead film, they want to do an origin story from a hero we haven't seen just yet:

It's only a matter of time until they suggest Carol Danvers as well. Also last year we heard that actress Katee Sackhoff is really interested in portraying Ms.Marvel!
Lastly, Devin Faraci added:
My sources tell me that we will see an iteration of Captain Marvel onscreen by 2016 - either at the end of Phase Two or the beginning of Phase Three - in another Marvel movie.
