"Falling in love is a crazy thing to do. It's like a socially acceptable form of insanity." Spike Jonze's Her is without a doubt one of the best movies I've seen in a while. Directed by Spike Jonze, the genius behind such gems as Being John Malkovich and Where The Wild Things Are, his latest film, Her, tells the remarkable story of a lonely writer who falls for his iOS operating system. While that sounds rather far-fetched, the film does a magnificent job at showing the way the world is, sadly, heading.

Set in a, slightly, futuristic LA, Her tells the story of Theodore played by the brilliant Joaquin Phoenix, a lonely writer who falls in love with his new iOS system, named Samantha, voiced by the extraordinary Scarlett Johansson. Theodore has recently neglected from any social activity since the split from his wife, played by a gorgeous Rooney Mara. As Theodore talks with Samantha more and more, he eventually falls for her, and what ensues is one of the best romantic comedies of all time.
If you look at this film as a simple story about a guy falling in love with his phone, you would think it’s just a deranged story about a twelve year-olds day. But the more you delve into this film, the more heart and soul you find. While I understand, I am at a very young age (being sixteen as I write this review) I too related to Spike Jonze’s film. A lovely part about Her is it’s dazzling mix of romance, drama and comedy. I was pleasantly surprised at the amount of times I cracked up laughing during this film.

One major factor that makes Her one of the finest films I have seen in a while, is it’s brilliant acting. Both Joaquin Phoenix and Scarlett Johansson give amazing performances. Johansson pushes the boundaries of voice acting in this film in ways beyond the brilliance of Disney/Pixar films. Another brilliant performance is from Man Of Steel star, Amy Adams. Adams is really the audience in the film, or at least that is how I saw her character. She really showed the heart and warmth that the person needs.
Sadly, the human race is heading into Her’s direction more and more every single day; I happily award Her five stars out of five, sparking a brilliant start to 2014. If it is Theodore’s heart-warming take on life, or if it is Her’s uplifting ending, Spike Jonze’s latest film is a film that many other films wish they could be, I really could not recommend Her enough.
