Today, it was announced (via Variety) that director David Yates will helm the upcoming Harry Potter spin-off Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them! David Yates will return the world of wizards and warlocks in this upcoming spin-off that is set roughly 70 years before Harry is even born. Author J.K Rowling adds:
"Although it will be set in the worldwide community of witches and wizards where I was so happy for seventeen years, ‘Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them’ is neither a prequel nor a sequel to the Harry Potter series, but an extension of the wizarding world,"David Yates directed the last several Harry Potter films so its no surprise that he was the pick for this spin-off. At one time Gravity and the Prisoner of Azkaban director Alfonso Cuaron was approached for the project but turned it down.
